The 2013 PLACE Regeneration Summit was held in Burslem on May 16th 2013 and Tottenham was represented by a number of local groups: Paul Head Principal of CONEL, Sona Mahtani of The Selby Trust, Local Councillor Alan Strickland and Monica Duncan, Headteacher of Northumberland Park School. The Chief executive of The Boxing Academy, Anna Cain, was there alongside one of our trustees, Kay Horne.

BA Fundraising for Comic Relief raises £160.20!

The Boxing Academy staff and students are delighted to announce that we have raised £160.20 for our wonderful funders Comic Relief for this year’s Red Nose Day. The money was raised by running non-uniform days throughout the term when students paid to wear their own clothes and also holding gym sessions for the general public. It feels good to give something back and be part of the amazing £75 million raised for good causes (like us!) in this year’s total!

The Boxing Academy in Hackney hosted a visit from Radio 1Xtra DJ Sarah Jane today, who came to talk to some of our current students and leavers about the BA, what it has meant to them and how the Comic Relief funding has helped. Sarah-Jane found time to do a few rounds on the pads too – and wasn’t half bad!

The show will be broadcast on Wednesday 13th March (1-4pm) to publicise the upcoming Red Nose Day on Friday. You can listen to it on our channel here

Media Trust presentation at Channel 4!

Students from The Boxing Academy were invited to present their work at a showcase of youth media run by the Media Trust and sponsored by the Jack Petchey Foundation at Channel 4 on Thursday 7th March. Short films and photos by students from both the Hackney and Tottenham sites were on display and the feedback was very positive. The BA has been very lucky to get such marvellous opportunities from the Media Trust and it was good to be able to say thank you to Mr. Petchey himself.

St. James’ Palace with The Prince’s Trust SiB Report Back!

Anna Cain, Chief Executive of The Boxing Academy was invited to a “Seeing Is Believing” report back session with Prince Charles at St. James’ Palace this week.

Anna was invited to present a commentary on the success of the SiB programme for The Boxing Academy with Duncan Tait, CEO of Fujistu. She also thanked Pinsent Masons LLP for their legal support and O2 for their data management help, both of which have come through the SiB visit last March. The Business in the Community “Business Connector” for Tottenham, Kay Horne, also attended. It was a great way to report back to HRH on a very positive outcome for the charity and express our thanks for the help and support we have received through The Prince’s Charities.

Snow does not disrupt normal service at the BA!

The severe weather made no impression on classes at the Boxing Academy today thanks to the wonders of technology. Our BTEC Sport teacher Jordan Clarke was stuck in Kent but delivered three lessons via FaceTime to make sure that the students did not miss out on their learning, ably supported by the pod leaders in situ.

To make sure everyone was paying attention, Jordan got all his hats together (he has a large collection of dodgy headgear) and changed one every five minutes, and at the end of the lesson the students were asked to tell him how many hats he had worn. Everyone who got it right got a star card!!

This a a great example of how the staff at the Boxing Academy are dedicated to making sure that our students get as much support as possible in their education, using a huge range of methods and strategies to that end. Everyone loved BTEC Sport today!

The Boxing Academy was mentioned today at the launch of the Tottenham Taskforce report as a shining example of the good things to be found in Tottenham. Our patron David Lammy, Sir Stuart Lipton (who headed the Task Force), Lord Heseltine and Alan Strickland, Haringey’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Social Inclusion all spoke positively about the future for Tottenham and how important it was to to ensure the funding on offer delivers effective regeneration and growth.

The Boxing Academy’s Chair of Trustees, Inspector Chris Donaldson, was the recipient of an award for bravery and dedication during the last year’s riots at a commendation ceremony in Haringey this week. Also commended was Sergeant Mike Tisi who starred in the Boxing Academy students’ film “What’s Happening Tottenham?” and fourteen other officers were also commended for their bravery and professionalism while on duty facing unprecedented levels of violence.

Marines Adventure Day

Students and staff from The Boxing Academy were lucky enough to attend a ‘Meet the Marines’ event which took place at Brent Reservoir. They got the opportunity to try their hand at a number of activities which closely mirror the operational skills required to be able to wear the famous Green Beret of the Royal Marines.

Under the watchful and expert eye of the Marines they took part in an IED-spotting tactical exercise, military awareness, leadership and team building activities, and went climbing and then on a Zodiac speedboat; all physical tests aimed at highlighting the challenges faced by the Royal Navy’s elite fighting force.

The day was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience for all as we are very grateful to the Royal Marines for yet again offering The Boxing Academy a chance to shine!
