Consultation on a proposed expansion of age range for the Boxing Academy, with effect from September 2021
The Boxing Academy opened as an Alternative Provision Free School in May 2017. The mission of the school is to offer high quality education and development to the most hard-to-reach girls and boys, realised through the discipline and ethos of boxing. It was rated Outstanding in all areas by Ofsted in March 2020.
Since moving to a new temporary site in September 2020, the school has been proud to open fully for all its pupils during the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to requests from commissioners, both in Hackney and the surrounding boroughs, the Academy has decided to consult on expanding our offer to include years 8 and 9 (KS3).
The Boxing Academy has achieved strong outcomes for some of the most vulnerable and challenging students in the education system, often after years of poor educational experiences. During the last three years the number of EHCP students referred to the academy has steadily risen, as has the number of LAC students referred by virtual schools. In many cases these students could have come to the BA sooner and had even better outcomes as a result.
The new site means that the academy could safely provide for a younger cohort without disrupting its established KS4 programme. There are no plans to increase the Published Admission Number (PAN). Admission arrangements will remain unchanged. There will be no capital costs associated with this proposal.
